In general, both passenger and freight trains only have one locomotive and this is normally always at the front of the train; thus when reversing direction off the train then it has to get from one end, around the coaches on a parallel line and then back onto the coaches from the other end.

There are in the UK just a few "fixed formation" trains with a locomotive permanently at one end and a specific vehicle ("a driving trailer") at the other; these work in "push-pull" mode- hence for one direction the locomotive is at the back and pushing the train.

Other passenger trains have their traction distributed along their length, with driving cabs in the special coaches at each end of the train. These are effectively "multiple units" although strictly that term means that a longer train can be formed by joining sets together and then the driver of the front set having control of all the sets which make up the entire train.

Freight is (almost) always hauled by a locomotive, except for short slow speed shunting manoevers. However particularly in engineering worksites, then it is usual to provide a locomotive at each end of the rake of wagonssot hatb they can be hauled in one direction by one loco and later hauled back again by the other loco. This is not however a feature of freight on the normal operational railway, but potentially could be utilised for specific journeys if the track geography made it sensible.

Holding any train in a tunnel is not desireable, particularly if diesel hauled as many of the UK freight trains are (because would otherwise need to change locos when needing to trverse a section of non-electrified route. Only a few of the mainline are electrified and few cross country routes are). However it is in general prohibited, but there may be some locations or certain types of traffice where there are special instructions to prohibit.
