Method of block working
#1
Dear Members,

Do we need to mention method of block working for double line ? or we need to mention block working controlled by automatic (passable) signal for double line?

Kindly clarify ?. Thanks in advance.

Dear NJK

Exactly what's expected here is a bit of a grey area.

If you decide that a low-traffic density area is to be operated by an "alternative method" such as a staff or one train working, you must say this explicitly - as well as showing the (position and wording of) any extra notice boards or extra equipment (such as a cupboard for the staff).

In theory, you ought to declare every line worked by track circuit block to be so, but in practice the examiner will work this out because you've provided regular and continuous track circuits and colour light signals, so you're unlikely to be penalised for omitting this statement.

You will also have some amount of non-track-circuited yard areas expected to be worked by shunter's verbal instruction - again the examiner will work this out, given that you show relevant features such as limit of track circuiting, shunt class route (with optional shunter's acceptance) to enter the yard, and a (main or shunt) signal with trap points at the exit of the yard.

Re automatic signals, these are still classed as track circuit block working, so don't need any extra comment - but you will still get some credit for indicating that they work automatically and have a replacement function. If you want to be clever, you can note that the rule book now no longer allows signals to be passed on the driver's authority.

best wishes

For the length of time it takes to write:
"All lines operated by Track Circuit Block except, ......."

then I would definitely do so. Even if you only get a half mark for that then it is probably the highest rate you will achieve on a "marks per minute" basis
