The largest scanner readily available at work is A3 size, so tend to scan in portions at that size. Not too fiddly and actually works quite well then to put into Powerpoint and have a decent screenful at a time if showing to a group.
Could actually use an A4 scanner in portrait mode, but would be pretty fiddly and given the fact that it is good to have a small overlap between adjacent portions of a scan, then each scan would actually not cover much length at all. When working for Network Rail, the wide scanners for rolled paper and asssociated printers were definitely a luxury, but resultant file size was very large. Printing of A3 or A4 portions of the IRSE's pdfs can be achieved several ways 1. The Study DVD should already have versions of appropriate size 2. Copy portion to clipboard and paste into photo editing program 3. Use "Prt Scr" key which of course no longer actually "prints screen" but useful to copy into other software when other methods not available. If you have a small number to do for educational purposes, I could ask a former colleague who might do some scans as a favour. Send me a PM to let me know what you are a after.

Many thanks to you both. There is a plotter at work however I have printed off on A3, quite small to work on but will see how it scans in. I just wanted to work through the example layouts before attempting one myself and wondered how fellow students managed to submit their attempts to the forum.

I don't think we have had many or any mod 2 layout attempts. Probabl because of the reason you highlight. Most stuff tends to be the calcution then wordy discussion around the bits that caused trouble as people laid it out.

I was suggesting that you actually printed approx full size but in A3 sized portions.
You can generally use Adobe pdf reader to copy to a clip board and then paste into some other programme; if you view on screen and zoom so as it fills the height and then take such portions into something like Powerpoinyt and print each of those pages on an A3 printer then it works aout about right.
