2008 results
#1
Several people seem to be getting anxious re getting their results. I understand that they are likely, as usual , to go before Council next Wednesday and it's bound to take several days to get them ready for dispatch. It will then depend on the Christmas post but I suspect that they are likely to arrive at UK addresses in the period from the weekend of 20th Dec

When you know your results for 2008, please think about what you will be doing for 2009 and declare your intentons by completing the POLL at:

Hi all,
I just called the IRSE to find out when the results will be posted (couldn't play the waiting game any longer). I came to know that the results are being put into envelopes (1st class post) at the moment today. So we should be getting them by the end of this week, hopefully.
Just want to wish everyone all the best.
Best Wishes

Without betraying any confidences, the results that I have been made aware of so far are:
Person A: Pass 2, Pass 3, Credit 5 [took 3 papers]
Person B: Pass 3 [took 1 paper]
Person C: Pass 1 [took 1 paper I think]
Person D: Near Miss 1 [took 1 paper]
Person E: Fail 1 [took 1 paper I think]
Person F: Near Miss 2, Near Miss 3 [took 2 papers I think]
Person G: Pass 3 [took 1 paper]

Far too small a sample to be statistically significant I know, but whereas A-C and G have posted (rather than just viewed) on this website, D, E & F have not....

Near Miss?

A NM is obviously disappointing; so near yet so far!
However look at it positively; you nearly did it - you must have got some 45% and would only have needed 50% to pass. It would only have taken a very few more marks to have got you over the threshold (I reckon that if a base score is 48 or 49 the examiners really do try to be that little more generous just to tip over the knife edge).

Don't forget that a NM qualifies you to receive some sort of feedback from the IRSE. To be honest it probably won't be a huge help, as all that tends to happen is that you'll get the "grade" separately for each question attempted; if one is a "F" then you don't know whether you got 5% or 40%; simiarly a "P" may be just 50% or something quite a bit better. However the feedback offered last year for module 1 was certainly far more helpful, just don't expect an individual critique of your answer; that is not the examiners job. [However there is nothing to stop you attempting the question afresh and posting it on this website to get some more directed feedback.]

Perhaps the NM feedback won't tell you much more than you already know if you perhaps you managed your time badly and spent too long on one answer at expense of others, but do ask for it if it doesn't come to you automatically- anything you glean could be useful for next year's attempt.

Hi Peter,
I'm going to post my results up as there seems to be a reluctance to share, interesting that I can have the near miss result reviewed, I must ask for that. However I answered 3 questions instead of 2 so I didn't spend the time I should have on each. I also don't know how the Examiners treated my mistake.

1. Near miss
2. Pass
3. Pass
5. Pass

Very well done. I'm sure you'll be fine for module 1 next time. I suspect you are right - you probably got enough marks in total but not when you only count two. I guess if you had been very very close, they may have used some judgement on whether to tip you over, but rules are rules! It is amazing what happens to ones thoughts when you are in the exam room.

Of course all of the passes get published in IRSE news, it is the ones takne but not passed that do not go on the public record but information on which can help those who are helping students.

Can you recall anything o0f the areas you covered to post something on the module 1 section to get some feedback here (separate from the IRSE feedback).

I guess that they'd have marked all 3 but probably then used your best two to get the result. It's easy to say it but there is a lesson re preparation of what to expect and reading the paper; I bet you are kicking yourself. Look on the bright side; it's far better than the situation in which some people find themselves of leaving the exam room hoping for a Pass or better then getting th shock of a Fail result. At least you realise what you did wrong and will be sure not to repeat that mistake!

It raises a question- why does module 1 only have two questions to answer unlike all the other written questions?
Actually I think this could be one reason why the pass rate in that module is relatively low In a 3 answer paper if your response for one is a little off target then it's going to be tough to have got enough on the only other one to pull you through; whereas if 1 of 3 answers you'd probably just about make it assuming the 3rd wasn't a complete disaster and the others were reasonably above the 50%.

Thanks for sharing and being public about your goof- let's hope others as well as yourself learn from it for next year!

Hi, I thought I would post my results also.

I sat Module 2 and 3 this year and passed both of these. This was with a few mistakes made in the exam. I missed out part B of one question in Module 3 which was worth 7 marks. This was due to lack of concentration probably.

In module 2, I thought everything was going well and that I might finish a complete layout in the time. I was doing my route tables and got them completed with about 5 mins left so I looked over my layout and realised that I had no track circuits in at all. I managed to get TC for 80% of the main line and the branch line that required them (Had token block section). I doubt I got all the TC's in the right place, especially around S&C but at least I got a lot of it done in that time. I probably lost 5% or so for that.

I think you have found that you can fall short of perfection and still pass the exam. Also that by doig the right thing in that last 5 minutes could have made the different between pass and fail. No tracks and you'd get none of the allocated marks; do 80% and I think you'd get very nearly all that were on offer if what you had done was OK.

So it has to be exams with written answers for you this year......

I will be doing module 1 and 5 this year. I had alook at the 2008 papers and wish I had done them this year as there were a lot of questions I could have answered without much studying!

I completed the written questions part of module 3 and dodged the control tables. I would far rather complete signalling principles questions than control tables any day!!!!!!
