Layout Risk Assessment
#1
Hi,

I am interested in finding out more information about the 'Layout Risk Assessment' tool. I understand that Network Rail use it?

Any responses would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rod

In the aftermath of Ladbroke Grove etc yes they did. Not sure quite how much it is used in anger now; was felt quite "heavy" for what it achieved and ituse was minimised and I think attempted to use something requiring less input and getting 80% of benefit for much less effort. Think it is still "in the toolkit" but how often it gets used is another matter......

Basically looks at the chances of collision of conflicting train movements- how many trains a day on each route and therefore the chances of one being held at a signal for the other one to proceed. Then should a SPAD occur, what would be the type of collision (head-on /side swipe / rear end) how far ahead of the signal SPADed, any particular special hazardous circumstances that might exacerbate. Get a numeric value of risk: likelihood and severity and hence risk rank the signals and determine what mitigations might help.
