Answers for Module A specimen questions
#1
Hi,

I will attempt Module A this year. I tried out specimen questions provided on IRSE website. However I couldn't find the answers. Has anyone else attempted the questions? I have attached scan copy of my attempt to the questions. It will be of great help if I could get some comments or feedback on it.

Thank you.

Thanks for posting this. For a variety of reasons, we have been absolutely hopeless as keeping in touch with things on here but we are hoping to get things moving again, so my apologies for the fact that this reply will be far too late to give you any useful feedback, however, I have had a look through the answers you gave and think that a couple of comments may well help others.

2. The question says that the train will operate on lines with and without signals. Did you consider this aspect when you discounted suggesting signal sighting as part of the compatibility? I would suggest that loading gauge (while important for overall compatibility) is not a matter for the CCS.

3. I am not from a metro background, but I would have thought that the track layout with minimal conflicts is one of the important features.

4. You selected the right answer, but only by good fortune. Note that the sighting is given as a time (8 seconds) which you put, unaltered into the formula for headway DISTANCE, so the 8s you put should have been 222m. I just happens that the answer with that correction is a shade over 96s, so I would have gone for c too, but if the boundaries in the answers had been different, you would have selected the one closest to you calculation of 88.

5. I do not agree with the order of your list. Have a look at the ERIC PD principle of risk reduction. Administrative controls should be low down and substitution (another way of saying reduction) should be higher.

8. I wonder whether this one is being a bit sneaky. Among the true statements, you put a), but the two choices of are not necessarily the same thing. Is it saying diverse over transmission vs direct cable? A good direct cable vs diverse but poor systems may not be best. For c), the statement is not clear as to whether they are FAULTS per se, or service affecting failures. The reason for calling out the distinction is that if you have two legs, there MUST be more faults (you have twice the chance of a fault) but not necessarily SERVICE AFFECTING ones. Maybe I am reading too much into the wording, but I suspect that is the sort of thing you need to take care to clarify yourself.

9. What was the basis of noting fibre cables are cheap to install? Are they any cheaper to INSTALL than others? However, it smells to be as though e) and c) are opposites - ie you would not use fibre for single phone, but it is for linking transmission sites.

10. Again, is this a trickly worded one. Correlation is important for the detail, but without a project spec, how do you know what you were supposed to be designing.

12. An important part is reading the question. This asks for BEST and WORST but you have only put what you think is best.
