Hi there, can anybody give me details on the content of QAF 54 course for London Underground.

QAF 54 is the certificate for entering secured rooms within LU network. To get this certificate, you need to attend and pass the Equipment Room Awareness course. From this course you get a ERA training certificate which then needs to be sent to the Issuing Authoirty for BCV, SSL & Tubelines. You will need to fill a form (QAF 54) which need to be signed by apporved staff. This form is then sent to the issuing authority with the training certificate and other documents.

it states that you are competent to enter the rooms stated in the
QAF(Quality Assurance Form) 54 form.

The course you mean ?

The course as explained is ERA. It is specific safety and procedure for entering rooms like SER CER and IMR and what to do if you find the unexpected (like water running over equipment), how to work in the room around vital equipment, and what to do and who to call AND IMPORTANTLY WHAT NOT TO DO and who to call if you do happen to disturb something you should not have done. As part of the course you visit an IMR in either Acton (LU CMO) or Stratford (TubeLines) training school. They show the subtleties of these places with exposed 600 V live terminations and so on, assuming you've not found one already while fumbling inside the door for a light switch.

ERA course requires 100% marks in the assessment test. The test is not that difficult, but 100% marks can trip you if not careful.


As above, there is no QAF54 course, the ERA gives you the technical competence, but (former Metronet) BCV+SSL (they do it as one now) and TubeLines (JNP) issue you with seperate personal QAF54s that is your authorisation to enter such rooms, as well as stamp your ERA certificate.

Some of this might sound OTT but there are many cases where non signalling/technical people need to enter SER etc for other work e.g. any building repairs, cleaning, manual handers moving kit, general sparks, and so on, all need ERA course and QAF54 certificate just to enter such a room. Boris Johnson, Peter Hendry and anyone else ain't allowed in without these documents (although there are provisions for supervising non-holders in certain circumstances - this is also covered on the ERa course.)

There is one exemption: if you hold certain IRSE licences - about 4-5 specific categories - you do not need ERA and QAF54; the licences would be those typically held by a maintenance signals technical officer dealing with faults and failures. Other IRSE licences are not accepted in lieu of QAF54+ERA.
