driver sighting in depot
#1
I find some information in internet. However, I would like to clarify if the driver sighting distance to the following equipment in depot is correct or not. The train is controlled manually.
If it is in wrong, in normal, what is their best distance (range) in depot?

• shunt signal 200m(min)
• stencil route indicator 200m(min)
• theatre indicator theatre 200m(min)

Thank you.

Standard GK/RT0045 from RSSB defines the readability requirements for the different types of signal for the UK mainline railway. Generally, equipment in depots would be category 3 (minimum 100m readability).

Have a look at the details here and if you have any specific questions, please feel free to come back and ask.

You seem to be considering a railway where the trains are generally in automatic operation on the running line but manually driven in the depot. On such a railway, "sighting distance" tends to mean the distance needed to view the signal and then brake to a stand.

Typically in this scenario the speed of the train is actually very limited when being manually driven- the train may actually be regulated to a max speed of 15 kph for example. Assuming that the trains can only be goingat slow speed and also have fast acting brakes, then there probably is never a need for a sighting distance exceeding 100m and a shorter distance may well be acceptable.

Recognise that there are other factors that limit the sighting of any particular signal than the performance specification of the generic item of equipment.
