Looking to start out on the exams
#1
Hi all,

I am looking to start studying for the IRSE Exams this year. Not 100% sure of the process!

My current employer has offer support for this by way of allowing me time in our design office and with the testing team if needed.

I am currently a Signalling PE and want the IRSE exams to help bolster my application for IEng.

Are there any study groups down in the South West that anyone knows about?

Cheers

Greetings, and welcome!
I'm no expert on this but I didn't want you to be greeted with silence!

Firstly you need to be an IRSE member so make sure your application is submitted by the end of next week.
Next you need to decide which papers to look at - information about the syllabus is on the IRSE website. Mod1 is compulsory, choose 3 others, and you can do them in any order. You can also take as long as you need so take a sensible decision over how many to attempt in any one year.

Once you are a member you'll have access to the study packs through the IRSE website. The current versions are variable in how helpful they are so this, and what study groups are accessible for you, may influence what papers to look at this year.

To clarify Dorothy's post; you do need some form of membership of the IRSE but it can be any grade, not just member.

The exam is there to prove the candidate understands the principles. It is a vocational exam, so my view is it is demonstrating day job skills rather than can be learnt from books.

The IRSE Website has plenty of information to assist with understanding what is in each module. I would recommend completing IST and supporting that with time on the design floor. It is unlikely you'd be able to get the necessary level of understanding just from sitting with designers.

As a PE, you should have a good start with Modules 1 and 7 (study group in London in March!). IST would give you a reasonable start for Modules 2 and 3. If you've a telecoms background or a signalling application background, you may wish to consider Modules 4 and 6 (tele) or 5 (application).

How far SW are you? There is a list of study groups on the IRSE Website too.

Final suggestion: read this website, ask questions plus attend the session in Derby and take IST. These will help you work out what you understand, what you need to review and what to avoid!

Good luck.

Cheers all for the info. I'm a member of the IRSE in as much as I have an installers license and am just about to complete my PE license - awaiting comp assessment.

Will pop over to the IRSE site and see what I can extract.

Plenty of questions to follow!

Welcome.
Holding a licence is not the same as having membership of the IRSE; oddly they are completely independent of each other. The IRSE website will give you information about the various grades of membership; anyone can apply for member of an appropriate category but your licence proves specific competencies.
As away and I'm sure you'll get answers.

Dorothy.

So now I am all signed up and just waiting for confirmation of a sponsor. Is there anyone in the South West that is thinking of doing these exams?

I'm aware of a study group in Chippenham, but I guess that's a bit far for you?
