Near Miss
#1
If you find that you have a "Near Miss" result, you can apply to the IRSE office for some feedback relating to your score. I discovered what this was for the first time last year and was frankly disappointed at what was provided; however it at least tells a candidate the band they achieved (i.e. Fail / Near Miss / Pass / Credit / Distinction) for each of the questions separately.

It seems that my comments have been taken on board to some extent and this year, for module 1 only, the examiners are experimenting with giving a bit more feedback.

Don't expect that it'll tell you technically got wrong, but it is aimed at giving some guidance whether you gave sufficient detail / covered the breadth of the question etc. To know whether it was worth doing and to determine if / how to extend to other modules the examiners are keen to find out how useful or otherwise it is perceived to be. So if you are in that category, please share your thoughts.

Would it be a good idea for people to put down the sort of feedback that they would find helpful (short of a full technical explanation) for other modules so that the IRSE could "design" their system taking account the "users" wishes?

Although not strictly in the category you describe, feedback of the grading in the individual questions would be a massive help if only so that people can see which areas may be their strengths and which are the no-hopers.

A few years ago I got a near miss for module 2. The feedback told me it was my headway calcs that had let me down, my actual layout etc was OK. So I concentrated on my calcs for the resit, and passed !

I have to say I had a positive, helpfull experience of the current feedback system.

Well I got a near miss for one of my modules this year and I think that it must be the old style of feedback previously mentioned, as all it states is the question number and then

R = reasonable
M = marginal
P = poor

I already had a fair idea of that myself as soon as I put down the pen at the end of the exam.

So please roll out the new style feedback ASAP! Although I am sure that those who mark the papers have enough on their hands, without having to provide detailed feedback to all the near misses. But a little more info would be useful and very welcome.

Steve, have you contacted the office directly as I felt the feedback offered was a little greater? It is not always possible to give detailled feedback simply due to the examiner's time (it is unpaid).

I supposed, often it is a compromise. Most exams of note give you zero feedback. You can always write/email the office and ask for comments to be passed to the exam committee.

No I haven't tried that yet, but after the exam review I feel happier and there is another unofficial review at the london study group on the 18th Feb. I'm going to find a more relevant area to post further details.

Thanks for the idea though.

I specifically asked Daniel Woodland whether the "enhanced feedback" for module 1 which was trialled last year would be repeated this time. He said yes, but no student had let them know whether it was found helpful or not. Apparently all the Study Group leaders were contacted by the IRSE office (I wasn't, Peter M doesn't recall being contacted either- were you?).
Daniel then said he personally emailed every student to which it had been sent and not a single one of them responded (do you recall 1. getting that enhanced feedback, 2. getting a follow-up email?). See notes of Jan09 meeting.

One of my candidates (mod3) has been sent their "Near Miss" information, another has not yet received (mod5).  I imagine that they might be sending out by alphabetical order of name or by module and that if you haven't already received the relevant email that it might be coming soon.  I guess that they would intend to get all out well in advance of the Exam Review meeting

 Seems like alphabetical order of surname.
